PROJECTS

Many of my projects are agricultural based as I grew up and have worked on the family farm. The experience has led me to see gaps in the market that require a product that saves on time or money. I have great pride in my designs and show so by manufacturing detailed and precise prototypes to test and use.

Here is a sample of some of the projects undertaken by me either for college or to fulfill my engineering passion:

Latest Projects

'The Moovher': The Moovher was the end product of my final year honours degree course in Mechanical Engineering completed in GMIT ( Galway Mayo Institute of Technology) as my fourth year Thesis. The concept was to deveop a product that is used to aid a downer cow to recovery. The project was a success as I manufactured working prototype and tested in on a downer cow and the test yielded positive results.

The downer cow featured on the video went 'down' before calving and the Moovher was used to move her from the calving shed to a green field more suitable for her recovery. the next day she calved and the Moovher was used to help her regain her walk and ater two dwys of use she was back to full mobility. The success of this product is remarkable as the same cow made a full recovery in a very short time. The Moovher will be on stand by this year as the featured cow is expecting twin calves in the spring time !

The Thesis completed with this project shows all the workings and calculationd along with a market survey carried out.

'Easy Sweep Silage Pusher': A product designed to reduce labor on the farm and also to increase the intake of feed stuff by animals as the feed is easily kept at reach. The product is attached to a tractor so operation is quick and easy, also requires virtually no labor. This product was brought to thee Mayo Ploughung Championships in 2012 for a market survey and can be seen working on You Tube by searching, 'EMurphyEng Silage Pusher'.

The Petrol Tractor: Having received a scrap John Deere gator as a restore project it became clear that a redesign would be more challenging. By salvaging parts and designing a new chassis allowed me to produce a 13 hp (engine out of a power washer) petrol tractor for my younger brother to be used around the farm. It has a variable speed transmission and a restricted (I modified the original carburetor) engine speed means that this is a safe and easy to use item for odd jobs around the farm.

Malone Shake N Rake:

  • Entrusted with responsibility to lead a research and design project combining a hay tender and rake in the same product. I produced one prototype, and oversaw it being tested by agricultural contractors and private farmers during the summer of 2014. In the testing phase, I was responsible for ensuring full adherence to the budget and examining any potential faults found. from which modifications would be carried out and re-testing would occur soon after. I developed a second prototype that was used for comprehensive testing during the 2015 summer silage season.

  • Apart from researching and developing the innovative combination machine I was also responsible for the design and testing of a whole new range of grassland products that were total new to the company. These include standard tedders and rakes that utilise imported driveline components coupled with a chassis designed by myself and manufactured in-house.

  • Carried out extensive research into tedders and rakes worldwide, and focused on ways I could bring about design improvements for these products on their own as well as how they might be combined together into one effective product.

  • Liaise with colleagues throughout the company and select testers as I produced each new iteration.

  • This role required me to analyse and minimise risk and to test all design elements thoroughly before putting them to use. I refered to European safety standards and protocols at all times.

  • Apart from the research and design project, I was also responsible for developing and managing relationships with an array of suppliers, including Frandent and Betuzzo in Italy. Constantly seeking out new suppliers who may offer cost-saving benefits or enhanced supplies to the company.

  • The development of a custom gearbox drive was completed with Star Gearboxes. I designed the gearbox layout and ratios. They supplied us with working prototypes. It was really satisfying to get to design a custom gearbox.
